How To Diet: Control Your BMI, And You Will Know How To Lose Weight And Avoid Metabolic Syndrome
Most of us are familiar with the BMI (Body Mass Index) as a screening tool for diagnosing obesity. Once the numeric value of the BMI exceeds 25, there is an increase in the risk of developing weight-related disease. In part, the peril is related to an increase in fat in and around vital organs (liver, pancreas, kidneys).
Associated with obesity is “metabolic syndrome” which is a collection of risk factors associated with heart disease. (These risk factors include a large waistline, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar).
Having even one of these risk factors increases the danger of developing heart disease. The incidence of metabolic syndrome is increasing as the population at large becomes heavier.
This all sounds bad but the silver lining is this: according to the scientific community, even a modest reduction in weight can reduce the dangers associated with metabolic syndrome. So, the important question appears to be this: how can we best lose weight and sustain the loss?
When we are overweight, there is one “bottom-line” cause: we are consuming more calories than we are burning up. It’s as simple as that, folks.

- Eat restaurant-style. This means that instead of putting bowls and platters on the table, dish up plates at the stove or counter-top.
- No second servings please
.- Fill your plate like this: one-half for fruits and vegetables, one- fourth for protein (beef, chicken, eggs), and the remaining fourth is for grains, preferably whole grain, breads, cereals, and pastas.
- Drink skim or reduced-fat milk for your beverage
- Stop all sugar-sweetened beverages immediately. They have no nutritional value and bring only useless calories.
- Keep a prepared supply of nutritional snacks available for mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks (fruit, vegetables, reduced-fat cheese, nuts, whole grain crackers).
- (Consume these in moderation also, please).
- Incorporate movement into your daily life. Walk whenever you can. Ride your bike to close destinations. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Park in a more distant spot in the lot. Walk after lunch and dinner. Play with the kids. Toss a frisbee for the dog and run along with him. (Good cardiovascular conditioning for both of you!)
- Set reasonable goals. Don’t expect to lose more than a pound or two per week. If you lose more than that, it’s either water or muscle that you’re losing).
- Remember, the weight didn’t come on overnight and it won’t disappear that way either. However, it will disappear one ounce at a time…and the time will pass whether you’re losing weight or not.
There will be a day when you look in the mirror and say…”why, I believe you are losing weight”! And, you will keep it off if you incorporate these simple steps into your daily life.
